General information about the Anubias Barteri Mother Plant

Meet the Anubias Barteri Mother Plant; a beautiful and sturdy plant that's perfect for decorating your aquarium. There are several reasons why you might choose a mother plant. Mother plants often perform better than so-called "daughter plants." This is because mother plants are generally stronger. They are at least six months old and have been grown in a spacious pot, allowing them to grow large and sturdy. Thanks to their impressive size, robustness, and full appearance, they are very suitable as decorative elements in your aquarium.

When planting the Anubias Barteri mother plant, it's important to remember that you shouldn't plant plants from this family directly in the ground. Ensure the rhizome always remains above the gravel. Even better is to tie the plant to an ornamental structure, such as wood or stone. Make sure the plant gets sufficient water circulation and isn't tied too tightly, as this can cause suffocation and pinching. To prevent this, you can also secure the plant with special plant glue or acrylic superglue based on cyanoacrylate. Furthermore, the Anubias thrives in dark places. Too much light can hinder its growth, so make sure the plant is shaded from other plants.

If you want to propagate the Anubias Barteri mother plant, you can cut off every four or five leaves from the rhizome and then plant them on a decorative ornament or in the gravel. The rhizome often runs horizontally and has a slightly swollen appearance. It looks a bit like a thick root from which leaves can grow.

An important tip when pruning Anubias is not to prune too much at once. Plants in the Anubias family can release oxalic acid when pruned, which can be harmful to your aquarium. Opinions differ on this. In any case, small amounts won't harm the other aquarium inhabitants, so be sure to keep pruning to a minimum.

Planting on the ground
If you want to plant Anubias directly in the ground, it is important that you take care of the thin rootslightPlace the Anubias in the ground, while the rhizome itself should remain on or above the ground. Make sure the rhizome isn't covered, as it can suffocate and prevent the plant from growing properly. Make a small hole in the ground and place the roots inside, ensuring the plant is stable. This allows Anubias to establish itself well in your aquarium.

Planting on wood or stone
Anubias also thrives on wood or rocks, creating a beautiful, natural effect in your aquarium. To attach the plant to wood or rocks, you can use a piece of fishing line or cyanoacrylate-based glue.
You can also gently wedge the plant between a crack or crevice with your fingers. This is also where it grows naturally. Don't squeeze too hard, so as not to damage the plant; it's best to plant it a little loosely.

Pruning Anubias is essential for keeping this beautiful plant healthy and full. Anubias has a rhizome, meaning it grows via a horizontal root. If you want to propagate or trim the plant, you can either cut the rhizome or peel off the leaves.

If you decide to take cuttings, make sure you have a rhizome with at least four leaf layers, approximately 3 cm long (depending on the variety). This is important for successful root development and to ensure the new plant can establish well.
