Can goldfish and goldfish live in cold water?

Goldfish and fantails are known for their cold-water tolerance. They're often kept in larger pond tanks at various pet shops and aquarium specialty stores. You'll also often see them among planters, which are all cold-water tanks.

This was one of our older planters, we also kept goldfish and other coldwater fish in it.

Goldfish and goldfish thrive in cold water. In fact, they need cold water between 10 and 18 degrees Celsius. You often see them in ponds, cold-water planters, or in Dutch nature!

They are sometimes released into ditches and lakes. This is obviously not allowed, as the goldfish can survive this and grow very large. If they reach this size, they are harmful to the Dutch environment because they eat all the healthy aquatic plants. Therefore, never release your goldfish into a ditch or lake.

However, coldwater aquarium plants require different ones than those in a standard tropical aquarium. That's why I've written a blog post especially for you about which aquarium plants are good for goldfish and fantails.

Can you keep dwarf shrimp in cold water?

There are many different species of aquarium shrimp, and not all of them can handle cold water. Some species do better in colder water than others. If a shrimp lives in colder water, it becomes more lethargic and breeds less quickly. Neocaridina shrimp can survive at room temperature of at least 18 degrees Celsius. Caridina shrimp are more difficult to keep and require a minimum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius.

However, with shrimp, the colder you keep them, the slower they breed and the more lethargic they become. Therefore, in our experience, it's best to keep them all at a temperature of at least 21 degrees Celsius. What's your experience keeping dwarf shrimp in cold water?
